Again and so quickly the future has arrived and what seemed distant to us is now so close.
To keep our bodies healthy and able to keep pace with our dreams: HEALTH.
To have hopes for a better world: PEACE.
To make the eyes shine and the heart beat faster: LOVE.
Not to let the disheartenment and heartlessness of bad things bring us down: HOPE.
As it is never too much and usually comes to those who deserve it: LUCK.
And since no effort is in vain: ACHIEVEMENTS.
For those who fight with strength and persistence to get what they want: SUCCESS.
For the deserving: HAPPINESS.
For those who spread and infect with it: JOY.
To make this world a better, shinier, and more hopeful place: SMILES.
As a gift to those who persist: ACCOMPLISMENTS.
To make this world finally one: UNION.
Let's welcome the New Year with hope so that all of these nouns, so abstract so far, have an image and a real definition within everyone’s feeling of hope that they will only get bigger.
Start the new year promising to do your part for a better year and, no matter what happens, never stop believing that better days will come, because as Fernando Sabino, a Brazilian writer and reporter, said:
"Everything works out in the end, and if it doesn’t, it is because it hasn’t come to an end yet".

Novamente e tão rapidamente o futuro chegou e aquilo que nos parecia distante agora está tão próximo.
Para que nossos corpos estejam saudáveis e capazes de acompanhar o ritmo de nossos sonhos: SAÚDE.
Para alimentar as esperanças por um mundo melhor: PAZ.
A fim de dar brilho aos olhos e mais pulsações aos corações: AMOR.
Para que jamais deixemos o desânimo e a frieza das coisas ruins nos abater: ESPERANÇA.
Como nunca é demais e geralmente brinda quem merece: SORTE.
E já que nenhum esforço é em vão: REALIZAÇÕES.
Para aqueles que lutam com força e persistência em prol do que querem: SUCESSO.
Para os merecedores: FELICIDADE.
Para os que a espalham e contagiam: ALEGRIA.
Dando mais brilho e esperanças por um mundo melhor: SORRISOS.

A fim de que finalmente o mundo seja um só: UNIÃO.
Vamos receber o Ano Novo com esperança de que todos esses substantivos, até então abstratos, tenham dentro dos sentimentos de cada um uma imagem e uma definição concreta e recheada de esperança de que só irão aumentar.
Comece um novo ano prometendo fazer a sua parte por um ano melhor e que, independente do que aconteça, não irá deixar de acreditar que dias melhores virão, pois como disse Fernando Sabino, escritor e jornalista brasileiro:
"No fim tudo dá certo, e se não deu certo é porque ainda não chegou ao fim".

Biodiversidade é Vida
Com o objetivo de aumentar a conscientização sobre a importância da biodiversidade para o mundo, a Organização das Nações Unidas declarou 2010 como o “Ano Internacional da Biodiversidade”.
Trata-se de uma oportunidade para chamar atenção sobre a importância do tema para o bem-estar de todos e reduzir a perda da biodiversidade no Planeta.

Tartaruga em extinção é encontrada no Ceará
Uma tartaruga da espécie Dermochelys coriacea, popularmente conhecida como tartaruga de couro, foi encontrada ontem na Praia do Morro Branco, em Beberibe, no litoral cearense. Com quase dois metros e pesando cerca de 180 quilos, o animal estava sem uma das patas. A tartaruga será tratada e, quando tiver condições, deverá ser devolvida ao mar.
A tartaruga de couro é uma espécie ameaçada de extinção, que costuma desovar no litoral do Espírito Santo. O Ibama acredita que esta pode ter sido levada até Morro Branco pelas correntes marítimas. A espécie está protegida internacionalmente e sua caça é proibida.

Mata Atlântica continua diminuindo
O Atlas de Remanescentes Florestais da Mata Atlântica, uma parceria entre a Fundação SOS Mata Atlântica e o Instituto Nacional de Pesquisas Espaciais (INPE), divulgou em 2009 a constatação de que mais de 100 mil hectares de floresta foram suprimidos no período de 2005 a 2008.
A pesquisa avaliou a situação do Bioma em dez Estados, da Bahia ao Rio Grande do Sul, e indicou como mais críticas a situação de Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina e Bahia. Neste período perdeu-se mais de 100 mil hectares de floresta ou dois terços do tamanho da cidade de São Paulo. A parceria entre a Fundação e o INPE traz uma novidade para quem precisar acessar os dados: os mapas dos estados e municípios do Bioma poderão ser usados gratuitamente por estudantes, pesquisadores e universidades para fins de pesquisa e o download dos shapefiles estarão disponíveis nos sites.

CLIMATE CHANGE: IS THERE STILL HOPE?

The world has been receiving warnings for over a decade about the dangers of global warming and the imminent threat of uncontrollable disasters if nothing is done to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Copenhagen was seen as the conference of the century that would change once and for all the way the nations are dealing with the environment. It was the deadline to define an effective agreement to tackle climate change, but, unfortunately the world leaders were not able to take a definitive position on the issue and therefore the discussion was postponed to 2010.
But if, on the one hand, the 15th UN Conference on Climate Change (COP 15) failed, on the other hand, the Children’s Climate Change Forum organized by the UNICEF and the city of Copenhagen and held one week before the COP 15, was a display of youth involvement and engagement.
14 - 17 year olds from more than 40 countries across all continents participated in the Forum. The discussions were on the most varied issues from rising sea levels and droughts up to mitigation strategies (such as reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and its impacts) and adaptation (how to adapt to the effects of climate changes).
I had an opportunity to participate in the Forum as one of the young facilitators of the event and I can say how palpable the involvement and seriousness with which young people led the discussions were. It was possible to understand the different perspectives on the issue and how global warming affects every country in a singular way. At the same time it became increasingly clear that the issue concerns us all and requires an immediate response from all the inhabitants of the globe.
After seven days of intense discussions and hard work, young participants drafted a declaration and a plan of action with serious proposals, including local and global matters on several pressing climate change issues, highlighting the need for immediate action by both governments and the whole society.
The teenagers who took up the responsibility as climate ambassadors not only proposed actions but also committed themselves to developing projects in their countries and communities by mobilizing, raising awareness, and changing attitude. Now the time to act is getting increasingly short. If the COP 15 was not the time for a change, the responsibility of the leaders for making effective decision is even more urgent as well as our responsibility for taking action. MUDANÇAS CLIMÁTICAS: AINDA HÁ ESPERANÇAS?

O mundo vem sendo alertado há mais de uma década sobre os perigos do aquecimento global e a iminência de catástrofes incontroláveis se nada for feito para reduzir a emissão de gases causadores de efeito estufa.
Copenhague era vista como a conferência do século que mudaria de uma vez por todas a forma com que as nações vêm lidando com o meio ambiente. Era a data limite para se definir um acordo efetivo de combate às mudanças climáticas, mas infelizmente os líderes mundiais não foram capazes de assumir uma posição efetiva sobre o tema e a discussão foi assim postergada para 2010.
Mas, se por um lado a 15ª Conferência das Nações Unidas sobre Mudanças Climáticas (COP 15) fracassou, o Fórum de Adolescentes sobre Mudanças Climáticas, organizado pela UNICEF e a pela cidade de Copenhague e realizado uma semana antes da COP 15, foi um show de comprometimento e engajamento jovem.
Participaram do Fórum jovens de 14 a 17 anos de mais de 40 países de todos os continentes. As discussões foram as mais diversas, passando pela questão do aumento do nível dos mares e da seca, até discussões sobre estratégias de mitigação (como reduzir a emissão dos gases de efeito estufa e seus impactos) e adaptação (como se adaptar aos efeitos das mudanças climáticas).
Tive a oportunidade de participar do Fórum como uma das facilitadoras jovem do evento e posso afirmar como era palpável o envolvimento e a seriedade com que os jovens lideraram as discussões. Foi possível entender as diferentes perspectivas sobre o assunto e como o aquecimento global afeta de forma singular cada país. Ao mesmo tempo ficou cada vez mais claro que o tema diz respeito a todos e exige uma resposta imediata de todos os habitantes do globo.
Depois de intensos sete dias de discussões e muito trabalho, os adolescentes participantes elaboraram uma declaração e um plano de ação com propostas sérias, incluindo questões locais e globais sobre diversos temas preocupantes da mudança climática, destacando a necessidade de ação imediata tanto por parte dos governantes quanto por parte de toda a sociedade.
Os adolescentes do Fórum, que assumiram a responsabilidade de serem embaixadores do clima, não só propuseram ações como também se comprometeram a elaborar projetos em seus países e comunidades com ações de mobilização, conscientização e mudanças de atitude. O tempo agora é cada vez mais curto para agir. Se a COP 15 não foi a hora da mudança, a responsabilidade dos líderes de tomada de decisão efetiva e urgente está ainda maior, assim como nossa responsabilidade de tomada de atitude. Informe-se sobre o tema e engaje-se. Cobre de seus governantes posturas firmes no combate ao aquecimento. The Story of Cap & Trade
The Story of Stuff project led by American environmentalist Annie Leonard launched her new video: The Story of Cap & Trade. In this new documentary, Cap & Trade (a concept that is basically equivalent to the carbon credit market but a lot broader), Annie points to some risks of relying on this system as a possible solution to global warming.

Climate agreement is for 2010
The decision on a new climate agreement, which should have been reached at the 15th UN Conference on Climate Change (COP-15) in Copenhagen, Denmark, is left for 2010. The 192 countries which took part in the meeting did not reach a consensus on a new legal and binding instrument to curb greenhouse gas emissions and address the issue of global warming.
The biggest success was a partial agreement signed between the United States, China, India, Brazil, and South Africa with support from other countries but it still depends on an official approval and leaves many negotiation questions open.
A new meeting will take place in six months in Bonn, Germany in order to prepare the next COP in December 2010 in Mexico.
